At first glance: Generally, agarwood is black brown in color, with a color as dark as ink when raw and as heavy as gold when ripe. Qinan is as firm as gold, as smooth as jade, and as fragrant as honey. On the contrary, it is a counterfeit.

Erwen: This is the most important means of identification. Generally, the scent of agarwood initially feels like a familiar medicinal scent, but upon closer inspection, one cannot recall what exactly it is. The main method of smelling agarwood is through "drilling", which means that the true scent of agarwood follows a filamentous path to the nose. To confirm this, simply light the living agarwood and carefully observe the path of its smoke, which is emitted in fine threads.

Three touch: The real agarwood becomes darker and brighter the more it is worn. The second grade water agarwood looks like it has a layer of oil, but it doesn't dirty your hands when touched, and your hands won't get oily either. If it is a counterfeit, it will leave a mark on the hand. Nowadays, there are also fake agarwood made by soaking mixed wood medicine in fragrant oil on the market. When identifying, the presence of water does not necessarily indicate that it is genuine.

If it is impossible to distinguish the true from the false after the above three steps, we can smell it by burning it directly with an open fire, or directly smoking a small piece of it with an electric incense burner. The true and false will definitely come to realize that the true agarwood flavor is mellow and simple, and the false agarwood often has a chemical essence flavor or a relatively turbid non agarwood flavor.
